GPA Calculator: Track Your Academic Performance
Our GPA (Grade Point Average) calculator helps students track their academic performance across semesters. Whether you're in high school, college, or graduate school, this tool calculates both semester GPA and cumulative GPA using various grading scales.
The calculator supports the standard 4.0 scale used in most US institutions, the 5.0 scale for weighted courses, and percentage-based grading systems. Add your courses, select grades, and instantly see your GPA calculated with quality points.
How GPA Is Calculated
Quality Points = Grade Points ร Credit Hours
GPA = Total Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours
For example, if you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course: Quality Points = (4.0 ร 3) + (3.0 ร 4) = 12 + 12 = 24. Total Credits = 7. GPA = 24 รท 7 = 3.43.
Understanding Grading Scales
4.0 Scale: The most common in the US. A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. Plus/minus grades add or subtract 0.3 (e.g., B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7).
5.0 Scale: Used for weighted courses (AP, Honors, IB). An A in a weighted course is worth 5.0 instead of 4.0, giving students an opportunity to exceed a 4.0 GPA.
Percentage Scale: Common in some countries. Your grade percentage is used directly in calculations. Some institutions convert percentages to letter grades using specific thresholds.
Good GPA Benchmarks
On a 4.0 scale: 3.5-4.0 is excellent (Dean's List level), 3.0-3.49 is good, 2.5-2.99 is average, 2.0-2.49 is below average, below 2.0 may require academic probation. Graduate schools typically expect 3.0+ for admission.
FAQ
What's the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA is calculated from one semester's courses. Cumulative GPA includes all semesters combined. Most scholarships and academic honors use cumulative GPA.
Do repeated courses affect my GPA?
Policies vary by institution. Some replace the old grade entirely (grade replacement), others average both attempts, and some count only the most recent. Check your school's policy.
How can I raise my GPA?
Focus on higher-credit courses where you can excel, retake courses with low grades if allowed, and consistently earn high grades in future semesters. Use the target GPA calculator to plan.
