IBAN Validator: Verify International Bank Account Numbers

Our IBAN validator checks if an International Bank Account Number is structurally valid using the ISO 13616 standard. It verifies the checksum, country code, length, and can look up bank information including BIC/SWIFT codes.

IBAN validation is essential for international payments, ensuring that bank transfers reach the correct account. A single digit error can cause payment failures or misdirected funds.

IBAN Structure

An IBAN consists of up to 34 alphanumeric characters:
Country Code: 2 letters (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2)
Check Digits: 2 digits (calculated using Mod 97)
BBAN: Basic Bank Account Number (country-specific format)

Example: DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00
DE = Germany, 89 = Check digits, 37040044 = Bank code, 0532013000 = Account number

How Validation Works

IBAN validation uses the Mod 97 algorithm defined in ISO 7064. The process:

  1. Move the first 4 characters to the end
  2. Replace letters with numbers (A=10, B=11... Z=35)
  3. Calculate remainder when divided by 97
  4. Valid IBAN has remainder of 1

What is SEPA?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) enables euro payments across 36 European countries with standard formats and low fees. SEPA payments use IBAN and BIC for routing. Our validator indicates whether a country is a SEPA member.

FAQ

Does valid structure mean the account exists?

No. IBAN validation only checks structural validity (format and checksum). It cannot verify that an account is active or belongs to a specific person. Only the receiving bank can confirm account existence.

What is BIC/SWIFT?

BIC (Bank Identifier Code) or SWIFT code is an 8-11 character code identifying a specific bank. It's often required alongside IBAN for international transfers, especially to non-SEPA countries.
